Kydex is a rigid thermoplastic used to manufacture gun holsters, mag pouches, and other carry equipment. If you have seen a holster with a hard plastic shell that clicks when you holster your gun, that shell is almost certainly Kydex.

What Is Kydex?
Kydex is a brand name (owned by Sekisui SPI) that has become a generic descriptor, similar to "Velcro." The material is technically an acrylic-PVC alloy thermoplastic. It comes in rigid sheets — most commonly .08 inch or .093 inch thick — and has two key properties that make it ideal for holsters:
- It softens at low temperatures (around 300°F) — within reach of a heat gun or oven
- It holds its formed shape permanently once cooled
A holster maker heats a Kydex sheet until it is pliable, forms it under pressure over a mold of a specific gun model, and lets it cool. The result is a shell with the exact contours of that firearm pressed into it.
How Kydex Holsters Are Made
The manufacturing process determines quality:
Vacuum forming: A heated sheet is pulled over a mold by vacuum pressure. Produces consistent results and sharp detail. Used by most commercial manufacturers.
Hand pressing: Heated sheet is pressed by hand or clamp over the mold. Labor-intensive, less consistent than vacuum forming, but allows custom modifications. Used by small-batch custom makers.
Injection molding: Melted Kydex is injected into a mold under high pressure. Expensive tooling, but extremely repeatable. Used by high-volume manufacturers.
The mold quality determines how well the holster fits your specific firearm. A manufacturer using actual guns (not CAD models) for mold making will produce a more precise fit.

When Kydex wins: Daily carry, wet climates, carriers who want a consistent draw from day one with no break-in. The dominant choice for IWB holsters today.
When leather wins: Carriers who prioritize comfort above all else and are willing to accept the break-in period and moisture limitations. OWB holsters for range use.
When hybrid wins: Carriers with sensitive skin who find pure Kydex uncomfortable against the body. The leather backing conforms to your body; the Kydex shell keeps the gun in place. The trade-off is added thickness and weight.

Kydex Thickness: .08 vs .093
Most IWB holsters use one of two Kydex sheet thicknesses:
.08 inch (.080): The consumer standard. Lighter and slightly more flexible than .093. The vast majority of holster brands use this thickness. Works well for everyday carry.
.093 inch: Thicker, stiffer, heavier. Stays rigid in high heat, resists deformation over years of hard use, and retains its molded shape longer. Historically used for duty holsters worn by law enforcement and military. Front Line uses .093 Kydex for this reason — a holster worn daily for years needs to maintain the same retention click in year 5 that it had in week 1.
The difference in weight is under 10 grams for a typical IWB holster. The difference in durability over a decade of carry is meaningful.
What to Look for in a Kydex Holster
Gun-Specific Molding
The holster must be molded to your exact firearm model, including the specific optics cut or light attachment if you run one. Audible Retention Click
When you holster the gun, you should hear and feel a click. This confirms the gun is fully seated and retained. A holster that lets the gun slide in silently may not be fully retaining it.
Full Trigger Guard Coverage
The entire trigger guard must be enclosed by the Kydex shell. No part of the trigger should be accessible while the gun is holstered. This is the most important safety feature of any holster. See our reholstering safely guide.
Adjustable Retention
A retention adjustment screw lets you tune how firmly the gun is held. Tighten for more resistance, loosen for a faster draw. Without this, you are stuck with whatever retention the manufacturer set at the factory.
Sweat Shield
For IWB carry, a sweat shield rising above the slide protects your skin from the metal and your gun from sweat. Full-length is better than half-length for active or hot-climate carry.
Hardware Quality
Clips, screws, and hardware are the first things to wear. Quality holsters use stainless or black nitride hardware. Check that replacement hardware is available from the manufacturer before buying.
Does Kydex Scratch Guns?
Kydex causes minor finish wear at the contact points on the slide over time — this is visible as a polished area where the shell grips the gun. It is cosmetic, not functional damage.
To minimize wear: ensure the holster is properly fitted (a sloppy fit creates more movement and more friction), keep the holster interior clean (debris in the shell acts like sandpaper), and choose a firearm finish that resists wear — Tenifer (Glock's standard finish), Cerakote, and stainless hold up best.
