Two Glocks, One Question
The Glock 19 and Glock 17 are the two most popular Glock models on the planet. Both are 9mm, both are reliable beyond question, and both have massive aftermarket support. But when it comes to concealed carry with an IWB holster, the differences between them matter more than most people think.
This comparison breaks down how each gun carries IWB, which body types and carry positions each suits best, and whether the holster fit changes between them.
Side-by-Side Specs
| Spec | Glock 19 (Compact) | Glock 17 (Full-Size) |
|---|---|---|
| Overall length | 7.36" | 8.03" |
| Height (with mag) | 5.04" | 5.47" |
| Width | 1.18" | 1.18" |
| Weight (unloaded) | 23.63 oz | 25.06 oz |
| Capacity | 15+1 | 17+1 |
| Barrel length | 4.02" | 4.49" |
The width is identical. The difference is in length (0.67") and height (0.43"). That translates to a longer slide and a longer grip on the G17.
Holster Fit: Different Molds, Same Quality
Front Line makes separate precision-molded holsters for each model. The G17 uses the Group A mold (shared with G17C, G22, and G22C). The G19 uses the Group B mold (shared with G23, G32, and G45). You cannot swap them. A G19 will rattle in a G17 holster, and a G17 won't seat properly in a G19 holster.
Both holsters share the same features: mag-safe retention, adjustable cant and ride height, built-in sweat shield, and rigid Kydex construction. The only difference is the mold geometry.
Which Conceals Better?
The G19 wins here, and it's not close.
The G19's shorter slide and shorter grip make it easier to hide in every carry position. The shorter grip is the bigger factor. Grip printing is the number one concealment problem for IWB carriers. The G19's compact grip tucks against your body with less material sticking above the beltline.
The G17 can absolutely be concealed IWB, but it requires more effort. You need a stronger forward cant, a deeper ride height, and a slightly looser shirt. Behind the hip (4-5 o'clock) or strong side (3-4 o'clock) works best for the G17. Appendix carry with a G17 is possible for taller, leaner carriers, but most people will print.
Which Carries More Comfortably?
This depends on your carry position:
Appendix carry: The G19 is significantly more comfortable. Less barrel length digging into your thigh when you sit, and a shorter grip that doesn't jab your stomach. The G17's extra length makes appendix carry workable but noticeably less comfortable for long days.
Strong side (3-4 o'clock): The difference narrows. Both guns carry well on the hip. The G17 is slightly heavier, so a quality gun belt matters more. But comfort is similar for most body types.
Behind hip (4-5 o'clock): Both carry fine here. The G17's extra length can actually feel more stable in this position because there's more holster surface against your body.
Capacity vs Concealment
This is the real decision. The G17 gives you 2 extra rounds (17+1 vs 15+1). The G19 gives you meaningfully better concealment and comfort. For most civilian carriers, those 2 rounds rarely justify the concealment trade-off.
But if you're coming from law enforcement, or if you train with a G17 and don't want to adjust your manual of arms, the full-size gun has its place. Front Line's adjustable holster features help minimize the G17's concealment disadvantages.
Carry Position Recommendations
| Position | Glock 19 | Glock 17 |
|---|---|---|
| Appendix (1-2) | Excellent | Workable (lean builds) |
| Strong side (3-4) | Excellent | Good |
| Behind hip (4-5) | Good | Good |
| Overall concealment | Better | Harder |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the same holster for both guns?
No. The G19 and G17 have different slide lengths. Front Line makes separate precision-molded holsters for each. Using the wrong holster gives you sloppy retention and a poor draw.
Which is better for a first concealed carry gun?
The G19 is the better choice for most first-time carriers. It's easier to conceal, lighter, and works well in every carry position. You still get 15+1 rounds, which is more than enough.
Does the G17 print more than the G19?
Yes. The G17's longer grip and slide create a larger outline under clothing. Strong side carry with a forward cant minimizes it, but the G19 will always be easier to hide.
Can the Glock 45 replace both?
The G45 pairs the G19's slide with the G17's grip. It conceals like a G19 on the slide end but prints like a G17 on the grip end. It's a solid compromise, and Front Line's Group B holster fits both the G19 and G45.
The Bottom Line
Both the Glock 19 and Glock 17 are outstanding carry guns. The G19 is the better IWB choice for most people thanks to its compact dimensions. The G17 is the better choice if capacity and full-size grip ergonomics are your priorities. Either way, Front Line builds a precision-molded IWB holster for each model with mag-safe design, adjustable cant and ride height, and 65+ years of IDF-proven durability.
